Paribartana Mohanty is a multimedia artist, primarily working with video, performance lectures and painting. His recent work explores and speculates on the new environment-disaster-landscapes emerging near the coast of the Bay of Bengal in Odisha and studies the deep impacts of recurring cyclones, tsunamis and land erosion on marginal coastal communities, and nature and culture at large. Paribartana’s interest and research are in examining the role of new technologies of algorithmic networks, digitalization, data mining, access and surveillance in shaping public perception of the environment.
His work has been exhibited in many group exhibitions and film festivals, including Rencontres de la photographie d'arles (2024), MACAN Museum, Indonesia; Ars Electronica Festival, Linz (2022); New Museum, New York (2022); Chennai Photo Biennale 3 (2022); 35th European Media Art Festival at Osnabrück (2022); 4th VH Award and EYEBEAM (2021); Goethe Institute, Mumbai (2022); Transart Triennale, London (2016); 45th International Film Festival Rotterdam (2016); 59th BFI London Film Festival (2015), Institute of Contemporary Art Singapore (2015); and Institute of Contemporary Art, Lyon, France (2013), among others.
Paribartana has presented two solo exhibitions at Vadehra Art Gallery, New Delhi, in 2012 and 2018. And has received many prestigious internation residency, grants and fellowships including Best Film 2004 at ARKIPEL Jakarta International Documentary and Experimental Film Festival; Honorary Mention at State of the ART(ist) Initiative, Ars Electronica Festival, Linz, 2024; Awarded, Serendipity Arles Grantees 2023-24; Two Months residency at Triangle Arts Association, New York, 2023; Prince Claus Mentorship Award for Cultural & Artistic Responses to Environmental Change, 2022-23; Awards of Excellence, Experimental film festival 2022 Emami Art, Kolkata; Sharjah Art Foundation Production Grant 2022, Sharjah.
Mohanty has presented and performed at Sharjah March Meeting; Goethe Institute New Delhi; South Asia Institute at Harvard University, Boston; School of Arts and Aesthetics (JNU); InC gathering of artists, Dhalao and Sarai Reader CSDS, New Delhi; Kochi Muziris Biennale Symposia; T.A.J. Residency & SKE Projects (2015), Bengaluru, among others.
He earned a BFA from Dhauli College of Art and Craft, Bhubaneswar (2004) and an MA in History of Art from the National Museum Institute, New Delhi (2006). Mohanty was born in 1982 in Odisha (India). He currently lives and works in Delhi and Odisha.
Paribartana is currently working as Visiting Faculty, Department of Art, Media and Performance, Shiv Nadar University.
